KARMA AND THE GLOBAL CRISIS: NO MORE WAR

International Buddhists observe Vesak and world issues
at United Nations Conference Center
BANGKOK, May 6 – “The followers of all world religions want peace, to seek peace and to say ‘No’ to all those who would abuse religion to escalate conflict in the world,” a prominent Thai Buddhist leader told a Buddhist and United Nations audience convened to consider ‘The Buddhist Approach to the Global Crisis.’
“There must be no more war or conflict in the name of religion,” Most Ven. Phra Dhammakosajarn, Chairman of the United Nations Day of Vesak and Rector of Thailand’s Mahachulalonnradjavidyalaya University asserted Wednesday at Bangkok’s United Nations Conference Center.
‘Festival’ and ‘celebration’ at the words being used to describe the International Council of the United Nations Day of Vesak (ICUNDV) 2009, but it must be noted that a broad spectrum of the world’s Buddhists have convened in Bangkok this week to consider a world in crisis, with multiple crises – crises of economy, environment and political life – and how to respond, with metta (faith) and with compassion, in a world which often seems absent of both.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, fresh from political threats and civil disorder in the Thai capital and elsewhere, the forced postponement and rescheduling of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional summit with China, India and other ‘dialogue partners’, and recently-returned from representing Southeast Asian regional economic concerns to the highest international forums in Europe, will share his faith, his understanding and his compassion for his country with an anticipated 2,000-plus Buddhists from over 70 countries who have convened in and near Bangkok this week.
He is expected to address the leadership response required in countries from both faithful and purely secular approaches.
‘Karma and the credit crunch’ is how one publication referred to what is at once a Buddhist-economics summit, an environmental summit, and a political crisis and peacemaking summit, where leaders, scholars, academics and ‘everyday’ Buddhist monks and laypeople are deeply engaged with applying their faith to the global crisis.
The Thai prime minister, a youngish Buddhist-influenced political leader with both a faith and world issue-oriented outlook, speaks to Buddhists from 71 countries worldwide today as they put the final touches of a Bangkok Declaration expected to guide Buddhists worldwide as they depart Thailand and disperse to a world in crisis.
Phra Dhammakosajarn stressed that the Bangkok Declaration is intended as an action-oriented commitment to be followed through in facing the world’s problems from a Buddhist faith perspective.
The ICUNDV Bangkok Declaration will be announced Wednesday afternoon before some 2,000 Buddhist participants, Thai government and United Nations officials.
